A History of Charles Demuth

Charles Demuth is an American painter and watercolorist who was born in Lancaster in 1883. During his life, he became known for developing a style of painting known as Precisionism, turning to oils late in his career. He spent most of his lifetime in Lancaster, suffering from lameness at an early age and severe diabetes later on. Rising through the hardships, Demuth graduated from Franklin and Marshall Academy and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. He even traveled to Paris to be a part of the avant-garde scene. Throughout his life, Demuth produced over a thousand works of art. This includes the well-known “My Egypt,” which was inspired by grain elevators in Lancaster. He created most of this artwork in his Lancaster home in a small second-floor studio overlooking the garden.
