The Time is Ripe to Visit Lancaster County Farmers Markets and Roadside Stands

May 31, 2014

While I absolutely love living in Lancaster County year round, I’m especially grateful for it this time of year.

Why? It’s now when all the farmers markets and roadside produce stands are at their peak of awesomeness!

If you’re visiting our area, you won’t want to miss the experience of strolling through our local markets and exploring the many roadside stands on our scenic backroads.

Throughout Lancaster County, numerous “Market Days” have become a staple for locals and visitors. Make it a point to visit one or more of these markets to get an authentic sampling of the food, arts and crafts, and the culture that make Lancaster so well loved.

Market Days in Lancaster County:

Monday: None (Explore the independent farm markets and roadside stands throughout the county instead!)

Tuesday:  Roots, Central Market

Wednesday:  Bird-in-Hand

Thursday: Bird-in-Hand, Columbia Market

Friday:  Green Dragon, Central Market, Bird-in-Hand, Columbia Market

Saturday:  Central Market, Bird-in-Hand, Lititz, New Holland, Columbia Market

Sunday:  All closed, shop the Antique Markets in Adamstown instead!

Monthly on 3rd Saturday: Ephrata Whistle Stop Open Air Market (May through October, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.)

For your convenience, here are the websites and physical addresses for each farmers market:

Central Market
23 North Market Street, Lancaster

Roots Market

2710 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird in Hand

On days when the larger markets aren’t open – or any other time – check out the wonderful independent farm markets where the owners sell their own produce, flowers, meats, bakery creations (like shoo-fly pie and whoopie pies!), and canned goods.  Some are relatively small, but others (like Shady Maple), are a cross between a farm market & grocery store. You’ll find these locations are usually open every day of the week, except Sunday.

Our list of favorite local Lancaster County independent markets:

Reiff’s Farm Market
2902 Rothsville Road, Ephrata

Hoover’s Farm Market
30 Erb’s Bridge Rd, Lititz

Ever Green Acres Produce
745 North Reading Road, Ephrata

Village Farm Market
1520 Division Highway, Ephrata

Shady Maple Market
1324 Main Street, East Earl

And, of course, you’ll find some quaint and cozy roadside stands as you drive across the backroads of our county. There are far too many of these stands to even begin listing them! As you happen to discover them in your travels, I encourage you to stop and see what they offer. From home-made jams and jellies, to freshly picked watermelon and cantaloupe, to farm fresh eggs, you’ll find all sorts of Lancaster County specialties to savor.

Enjoy – and remember to tell me about your favorite farm market experience!
