Unique Shopping Experience – Ephrata’s Green Dragon

January 27, 2010

If the ‘thrill of the hunt’ is the best part of shopping for you, then you need to check out one of Ephrata’s most famous attractions, the Green Dragon Market. Located on a thirty acre site in the heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, the Green Dragon Market has grown to be one of the largest Farmers Markets on the East Coast. At only 3 miles from the Smithton Inn, guests can easily enjoy their shopping adventure and still have time to spare!

The market features over 20 acres of FREE parking, and offers visitors the choice of shopping indoors or outdoors, which is key since it’s open year round, rain or shine, but ONLY on Fridays!

With 7 large market buildings and many other smaller shops, the Green Dragon merchants offer everything from “soup to nuts”. There is a local saying, “if you can’t buy it at the Green Dragon, it chust ain’t fer sale!”

In general, the types of things you can find at the Green Dragon include: Amish-made items (quilts, furniture, etc), apparel, baked goods, books, candy, collectibles, crafts, fabrics, flowers, food items, Hex signs, holiday decor, home furnishings, jewelry, music, quilts, shoes, sporting goods, and toys.

In particular, you can find some really tasty beef jerky at the Green Dragon. Also be sure to try some local favorites like Shoofly pie and Whoopie pies… and you can find some really terrific local jams, jellies, preserves and baked goods to bring home with you (believe me, the Shoofly pie won’t make it… to yummy not to eat right away!).

And not to be dismissed are the fantastic ‘people watching’ opportunities. You’ll encounter Amish and ‘plain people’, Pennsylvania Dutch locals, tourists, ‘hip’ teens and ‘yuppie’ adults, all looking for bargains and unique goods.

The Green Dragon is only open on Fridays, from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm until February 26th, then they switch back to their usual 9:00 pm closing time.
